This book is based on the author’s experience paddling in locations across Ontario such as Killarney, French River, Temagami, Algonquin, Frost Centre and Kawartha Highlands over the past 50 years. These adventures have been coupled with years of kayaking Class 4 whitewater and in the open ocean off the coast of Honduras. Only on rare occasions have high winds been welcome. Personally, negotiating extreme winds while canoeing has been an ordeal within the blunt context of not being an overly strong paddler. Hence, the content of this essay has been rendered from a combination of anguish, discomfort, and necessity.
The result is a collection of practical advice intended primarily for paddlers engaged in backcountry travel by canoe on inland lakes. Many of the concepts discussed are also applicable to sea kayaking, especially the Ewind Route Correction Tool. All topics are discussed from the perspective of extreme wind and wave conditions with a strong emphasis on safety. My hope is that the advice offered here will help reduce the hardship as well as the risk that high winds impart to this outdoor pursuit.
