In addition to the admirable quality of strength, Bear can often demonstrate great patience while waiting quietly by a stream’s edge, as in the picture, for the right moment to pluck a fish from a swirling current. Bear also has attributes that point toward the transcendent; such as Bear’s preference for honey that some believe represents a yearning for the sweetness of truth. We too, can find truth buried deep in the Tree of Life, where risk (bees!) sometimes also awaits. The long lines that run throughout the piece depict this connection of everything to everything else. One such closely connected pair is the lynx (pizheu) and the hare (waboose). In the picture, one can see these two framing a large circle --Mother Earth. In the centre of the earth is rendered a lake and forested shoreline depicting the wilds where the lynx and hare reside. Underneath and to the left of the water there are seven short lines of descending heights. This represents the seven-year cycle of the “boom-and-bust” nature of the hare population, which in turn, determines the number of lynx since they rely on the hare as a staple food. When there are many hare, there are more lynx; few hare, fewer lynx. However, as fish are relegated to the realms of water, they are in need of one who can carry their teachings to others. This special role falls to Turtle (Makkinak), chief figure among the fish clans, who is able to dwell both below the waters and upon the land. As such, Turtle is said to be a communicator, possessing the ability to speak the languages of all beings who dwell upon Mother Earth -- those of the waters, land and air -- and therefore acts as an emissary for all.

In this piece, one can see the prominence of Turtle setting out into the world to relay the important knowledge as imparted by all those gathered around her, to we human beings, rendered on the right. The prospect of Turtle as a ‘communicator’ strikes a paradoxical tone given that they do not produce readily audible sounds, and who, given the apparent absence of ears, were once thought by early science to be deaf. However, later science has been able to determine that their ears are, in fact, internal. In other words, it is this subtle yet vital internal mechanism that helps them understand and navigate the external world. This characteristic only heightens the importance of Turtle’s symbol for humanity, demonstrating the importance of the unseen, as the deepest truths about ourselves and our world are discerned through our internal, many would say “spiritual,” faculties. Born of water, as you can see represented in the artwork by the magenta-coloured eggs to the lower left, it spends most of its life there in nymph form after hatching. Following its final moult, it lives out its short adult life in the earthly domains of land and air, returning to the water to lay its eggs; thus, ensuring the next generation. The continuance of the life-force throughout their life cycle -- from eggs to nymphs and finally to mature dragonflies -- is rendered by way of the magenta-coloured eyes. Also depicting their dual natures are the dominant colours of their two worlds reflected in their bodies -- the blue of the aquatic realm and the sandy brown of the land.

As always, it is wise to learn the lessons provided by our fellow creatures. In this case, we can all be reminded of the importance of “dwelling in two worlds” as we undertake the urgent work necessary to understand and protect our fragile ecosystems. Our “two-world task” is to acquire what has come to be known as two-eyed seeing; the ability to view and study the natural world with both traditional Indigenous knowledge (one eye) and the Western sciences (the other eye). This fusion of cultural and scientific intelligences will create an enhanced approach to help ensure our success in addressing the serious environmental challenges we are faced with today. Indeed, this piece and its story were inspired by the work of Potawatomi knowledge keeper and scientist, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and her ground-breaking book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants.

The subject matter and style of artist Mark Nadjiwan is predominantly inspired by his First Nation heritage. He is a self-taught artist whose chosen medium is pen and ink and his unique style is primarily a “fusion” of the Woodland and Northwest Coast Native art traditions. In his work, one can often see the Woodland’s characteristic x-ray and wavy line motifs interwoven with the clean formlines and geometry that often typify Northwest Coast art. Mark’s work can be found in galleries and venues across Canada as well as private collections in both Canada and the United States. His First Nation roots are grounded in the Georgian Bay and Lake Superior Treaty regions.
