Start the first day with a paddle “blank” cut to shape and ready for hand carving. Under the guidance of our experienced instructors (the Museum’s Curatorial team), you will learn to use traditional hand tools and follow each step of the carving process from shaping and smoothing to the final sanding. After your paddle is carved and sanded, you can head down to Little Lake (weather permitting) and hop in one of our program canoes to test out your new paddle on the water - an experience that will leave you beaming!
By the end of the workshop, you will leave with a beautifully carved black cherry paddle and all the supplies needed to varnish it at home.
